Komen President and CEO Addressed Research in Philanthropy at 31st Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference®

Dr. Judy Salerno Captivates Audience at Physicians’ Education Resource®’s Premier Conference

Plainsboro, N.J. – March 11, 2014 –Judith A. Salerno, M.D., M.S., President and CEO of the Susan G. Komen® breast cancer organization, addressed the 31st Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference® attendees as the keynote speaker on Friday, March 7, 2014.  Those in the audience heard first-hand her and the organization’s position on the role of philanthropy in breast cancer research.

The Miami Breast Cancer Conference®, one of Physicians’ Education Resource’s® (PER®), top-attended continuing medical education conferences each year, was held at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, March 6-9, 2014.

In her speech, Dr. Salerno discussed the drive for results in breast cancer research funding in a time of tightening budgets; the move toward greater collaboration in the breast cancer arena; and the critical need to fund and foster the next generation of breast cancer researchers.  Komen is the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government, with $804 million invested since Komen’s founding in 1982.

“Dr. Salerno’s thoughtful remarks truly hit home with our conference attendees,” said Patrick I. Borgen, M.D., Chairman, Department of Surgery, Maimonides Hospital, Director, Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program; and Program Director, Miami Breast Cancer Conference®. “She is a wonderful leader, and we were very grateful to have her join us at this year’s event.”

For 31 years, the Miami Breast Cancer Conference® has been bringing together a multi-disciplinary faculty of internationally recognized experts in breast cancer, including surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and translational researchers to foster an integrated team approach to the management of patients with breast cancer.

“I was encouraged by the positive response of the attendees to our call for even greater collaboration across medical disciplines, research institutions and the organizations that support research and community health programs,” Salerno said. “As we move into the next 30 years of the breast cancer movement, this collaboration will be critical to end suffering from this disease. My thanks to Dr. Borgen and to conference attendees for the opportunity to represent Susan G. Komen at this important conference.”

As the leader of Susan G. Komen, Dr. Salerno is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the world’s largest breast cancer organization and for setting Komen’s strategic vision in research, community outreach, public policy and global programs.
