Physicians' Education Resource®, LLC (PER®), To Present "Best-In-Class Outcomes" Poster For Oncology Continuing Medical Education Reminiscent Of Medical School

PER®’s Annual School of Breast Oncology® to Be Recognized at the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions Industry Summit

PLAINSBORO, N.J. (May 7, 2015) — PER®’s Annual School of Breast Oncology®, which borrows best teaching practices from medical school, is being recognized by the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions, a leading organization dedicated to continuing education for healthcare professionals. PER, a renowned, accredited oncology-based continuing medical education provider, will showcase these approaches in a poster presentation during the “Best-in-Class Outcomes” session at the Alliance Industry Summit to be held from May 11 to 13 in Philadelphia.

“We’re honored to be recognized for our innovative teaching format, which immerses learners in breast oncology with like-minded colleagues and allows them to discuss real-life cancer cases and apply what they learn to their own practices. These are teaching methods that help oncologists retain and apply the education once they return to clinical practice,” said Phil Talamo, vice president of independent medical education and operations at PER. He will present the poster at this year’s conference.

Posters included in the summit’s “Best-in-Class Outcomes” session describe research-based continuing medical education approaches that have worked particularly well to impart important information to oncology healthcare professionals working to keep their skills current.

PER’s poster will describe the format of the highly interactive Annual School of Breast Oncology, where learners work closely with leading breast cancer experts in ways reminiscent of teaching approaches used at top medical schools. Learners and faculty discuss the latest clinical data and apply them to challenging cancer cases, solicited from learners before the activity. Faculty and learners participate in debates and panel discussions and join one another during meals for additional collaboration and discussion opportunities.

The poster will also describe how PER worked with faculty to integrate measures of the National Quality Forum and ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative into the educational content. These quality measures are used to evaluate how well services are delivered, with the overall goal of making care safer.

Alliance Industry Summit attendees visiting the poster session will also hear how the featured continuing medical education activities evaluated improvements in physician knowledge, competence and confidence – essential to translating what was learned into clinical practice. In PER’s case, results of comprehensive online pre- and post-tests, as well as post-activity follow-up survey results, will be shared.

The 12th Annual School of Breast Oncology, held in November of 2014, resulted in statistically significant improvements in physician knowledge and competence relative to understanding the mechanism of disease of breast cancer, interpretation of test results critical to diagnosis and treatment decision-making, and determining next steps in treatment for patients with breast cancer. Including a treatment-induced rash grading and assessment tool provided a valuable resource that clinicians can use to improve the care their patients with breast cancer receive.
