Komen President and CEO to Keynote 31st Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference®

Dr. Judy Salerno Joins Physicians’ Education Resource’s Premier Conference

Plainsboro, N.J. – Feb. 18, 2014 – Physicians’ Education Resource® (PER®), the go-to source for excellence in continuing medical education, announced today that Judith A. Salerno, M.D., M.S., President and CEO of the Susan G. Komen® breast cancer organization, will be the keynote speaker at the 31st Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference®. Registration is open for the conference, which will be hosted at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach March 6-9, 2014.

Dr. Salerno will be speaking about the role of philanthropy in research. She will discuss the importance of training the next generation of breast cancer researchers, which incorporates the responsibility of organizations such as Susan G. Komen in working with established scientists to encourage and foster future researchers. Dr. Salerno’s keynote speech will also highlight the need to work across institutions to share information.

“We are honored to have Dr. Salerno as the keynote speaker of the Miami Breast Cancer Conference®,” said Patrick I. Borgen, M.D., Chairman, Department of Surgery, Maimonides Hospital, Director, Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program; and Program Director, Miami Breast Cancer Conference®. “The goals of the conference are to encourage cross-team cooperation and to bring a multidisciplinary approach to care, and Dr. Salerno’s speech will embody those goals.”

For 31 years, the Miami Breast Cancer Conference® has been bringing together a multi-disciplinary faculty of internationally recognized experts in breast cancer, including surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and translational researchers to foster an integrated team approach to the management of patients with breast cancer.

“I’m looking forward to meeting with our colleagues in medical research, who work around-the-clock in laboratories, hospitals and their communities to end suffering from this disease,” said Dr. Salerno. “As the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside of the U.S. government, we welcome the opportunity to explore collaboration and research strategies to deliver treatments, prevent this disease and ensure that we are working together to support the next generation of breast cancer researchers.”

As of the leader of Susan G. Komen, Dr. Salerno is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the world’s largest breast cancer organization and for setting Komen’s strategic vision in research, community outreach, public policy and global programs. Prior to joining Komen in September 2013, Dr. Salerno was the Leonard D. Schaeffer Executive Officer of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, serving as executive director and chief operating officer. Dr. Salerno also served as Deputy Director of the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and co-founded the Washington D.C.-area Geriatric Education Center Consortium, a collaboration of more than 160 educational and community organizations within the Baltimore-Washington region.
